3. Simultaneous interpreting contest
The contest will be held at the Yifu Conference Hall, Hongkou Campus of SISU on 4th September, 2018. An important part of the contest is relay interpreting. Each language pair will have one faculty member of their university as team leader who will also serve as jury member at the contest. Test materials will be discussed and decided among all jury members. For all language pairs, the test will last for around 15 minutes and each contestant will interpret both into Chinese and into the non-Chinese language. Please refer to the appendix for the confirmation letter. An official invitation will be sent out in due time.
The closing ceremony and award giving ceremony will be held on the same day at around 5pm. Ms Katrin Zimmerman, Visiting Lecturer for Interpreting Chinese-English at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK, from University of Applied Languages Munich (SDI) of Germany will be speaking on behalf of the jury. The event will be broadcast live. There will also be interviews of the jury members, participating contestants, staff members and other professionals and guests. A reception will be arranged after the ceremony.
The Chinese-English winning team will provide simultaneous interpreting service for the following Forum on 6th and 7th September. It is paid service, with contract and fees in line with national standards. All faculty members and students coming for the contest are welcome to the Forum on the 6th and 7th.
4. The Forum
The Forum will be held in the first Lecture Hall, Hongkou Campus of SISU on 6th and 7th September, 2018. We are now calling for papers by master’s students and PhD candidates on subject matters including but not limited to:
- Interdisciplinary approach to the training of language staff for international organizations
- Ways to train “languages+” translators and interpreters to meet the evolving needs of international organizations
- Translation and Interpreting in the setting of international organizations
- Translation studies in an China and beyond
- Studies on language services
- Studies on conference management
- Studies on organizational structures
We shall invite some of the submitters to be thematic speakers at the Forum. Your work will be reviewed by experts and will be recommended, if deemed suitable, to journals either home or abroad. It may also be compiled into the Forum outcome publication.
Members of the SISU leadership, experts and scholars will give keynote speeches at the opening and the closing ceremonies of the Forum.
Please kindly submit your abstract as part of the confirmation letter (see appendix) before 1st July, 2018. An official invitation will be sent out once your abstract is approved.
5. Thematic Breakout Session
Professor Kilian Seeber, Director of the Interpreting Department, Programme Director of the MA in Conference Interpreting, Programme Director of the MAS in Interpreting Training, who will speak at the closing ceremony of the Forum, is giving a thematic lecture on the topic of cognitive task analysis as foundation for teaching in the afternoon of 6th September. All faculty members participating in the contest and/or Forum are welcome to the two-and-a-half-hour event. Interested graduate students and PhD candidates can also apply to the organizing committee and might be able to sit in upon confirmation.
