Founding of Graduate Institute of Interpretation and Translation, Shanghai International Studies University

September 2003

Cooperation agreement signed with United Nations Office at Geneva;

October 2003

GIIT¡¯s Simultaneous Interpretation Teaching and Research Center approved by the Ministry of Education as a key component of its 10th five-year (2000-2005) program and ¡°Project 211¡±;

January 2, 2004

China¡¯s first MA and PhD programs in translation studies launched at GIIT, with the first batch of students enrolled in September 2005;

April 2004

Cooperation agreement signed with the United Nations Office at Nairobi;

November 2005

The Framework Agreement for Cooperation on the Training of Conference Interpreters signed with the European Commission (EC), officially starting cooperation with the EU;

November 2005

Awarded the highest ranking by AIIC, the International Association of Conference Interpreters, as the only Asian university among the 15 top professional conference interpreting schools in the world;

May 2007

Approved by the Ministry of Education to offer MTI programs, with the first batch of MTI students enrolled in March 2008;

July 2008

First training-of-trainers(ToT) launched

August 2008

Cooperation agreement signed with United Nations Office at Vienna;

August 2008

The Memorandum of Understanding signed between Shanghai International Studies University and the United Nations, on The Training of Professionals for the UN and Other Cooperative Issues in line with the six UN working languages, in which GIIT is officially listed as one of the UN¡¯s MoU institutions around the world;

November 2008

Officially accepted as a member of IAMLADP¡¯s Universities Contact Group (UCG);

2009

Officially listed as China¡¯s innovative training center for multilingual professionals in the 21st century;

June 2009

Officially accepted as the 43rd member of the Conference Internationale d¡¯Instituts Universitaires de Traducteurs et Interpretes (CIUTI), the world¡¯s oldest and most prestigious international association of university institutes with translation and interpretation programs;

October 2010

Approved by the Ministry of Education as a pilot institute for the development of MTI programs;

November 2010

Cooperation framework agreement renewed with the United Nations Headquarters;

December 2010

Approved by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission as a pilot institute for postgraduate educational innovation;

December 2010

Cooperation agreement signed with the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization;

April 2011

Participant at the 1st UN-MoU Universities Conference jointly organized by the United Nations General Assembly and Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) attended by 18 UN-MoU universities which agree to establish a cooperation platform to reinforce the training of professional interpreters and translators to better address the needs of the UN;

2012

Recognized by AIIC Training Committee as the only institute in Mainland China that offers international conference interpreting programs in full compliance with AIIC criteria;

January 2012

Cooperation agreement signed with the European Parliament (EP);

December 2012

Three of GIIT¡¯s internship centers ¨C Shanghai Daily, Huawei Technologies, and GIIT Translation and Internship Center ¨C approved as pilot entities for city-wide reform of professional graduate degree programs by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, and more internship cooperation agreements signed with Kunshan Foreign Affairs Office, Shanghai Foreign Affairs office, and Pudong New Area Foreign Affairs Office.

Hosted the Third UN-MoU Universities Conference jointly organized by the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) and Shanghai International Studies University;

April 2014

Cooperation agreement signed with the Department of Public Information(DPI);

May 2014

Hosted CIUTI Annual Conference 2014; East Journal of Translation recognized as CIUTI publication;

May 2014

Shanghai Commission for MTI Education established with GIIT as its secretariat;

June 2014

GIIT¡¯s T&I training awarded by Shanghai Municipal Education Commission as Outstanding Achievement in Education in Shanghai (Level-1); and by the Ministry of Education as National Outstanding Achievement in Education (Level-2);

July 2014

GIIT organized Shanghai Summer School for Graduate Students in Translation Studies and T&I, commissioned by Shanghai Municipal Office of Degrees;

November 2014

Invited by the European Parliament(EP) to be the only founding member of Global Master in Conference Interpreting in Chinese-speaking countries;

September 2015

Chinese-Arabic-English Interpreting Program added;

September 2015

UN published the Chinese edition of flagship Basic Facts about the United Nations¡¯ Handbook translated by GIIT;

April 2016

DPI team of GIIT accomplished stand-by translation for UN secretary-general candidates interview;

September 2016

Chinese-Korean-English Interpreting Program and Chinese-Spanish-English Interpreting Program added;

September 2016

T&I Professionals Training Center for League of Arab States Countries established at GIIT, jointly commissioned by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education, and the Secretariat of the League of Arab States; 13 students coming from 7 Arabic countries enrolled;

October 2016

CIUTI set up its Asia-Pacific Office at GIIT;

October2016

Established Interdisciplinary Research Center and hosted 1st High-level International Conference on T&I Interdisciplinary Research;
